There is power in working with an accountability buddy. My buddy is my sister. We are very structured in our way of setting up goals that we would like to achieve. This is our process for encouraging each other.
- Decided what the end result looks like….
Some of my goals for 2024 included; eating healthier food, exercise more and strengthening my writing skills. For this, I have written what this would look like. So for having a healthier diet some of the ideal behaviours I’d like to adopt are, drinking more water, drinking less caffeine and cutting down on processed food. Now that I have an idea of what goals I need, I can move on to the next step.

- Create goals
It seems ideal to have many goals but it’s important to have a few that can be achieved over time. We have habits I’d like to adopt such as jog twice a week and the days I’ll do this. Then goals for things you might put off or procrastinate with. It works so we can check off our to-do list.
- Set up rewards
A step you might like to adopt is creating a reward system for when you have been performing consistently or have checked something off your to-do list. A lot of my rewards will be books that I’m interested in reading. You can also have a larger reward such as having a spa treatment or something want to buy that is a bit pricey. This is not something you have to do but it adds a bit of dimension to the goal setting.
- Have regular check-ins
Once you have the lists, discuss them and have regular meetings. We phone to discuss them or use WhatsApp. It helps to review the goals and also encourage each other. Sometimes it helps to get someone else’s view on how you’re doing and you’ll often see you’ve achieved more than you realised. It helps if this is a person you speak to regularly anyway.
- Bonus action– Set up Tracker App
I have also set up the Habit Now app where you can track your goals. It gives me helpful reminders on the days you need them. This is not a necessary step but accompanies the buddy system.
